About Book

In 1956 Tjio and Levan first identified the human diploid chromosome number to be 46. This was later confirmed by Ford and Hemerton in the same year. Then the human male complement was found to be 46, XY and female complement 46,XX. The first chromosomal abnormality, that is the presence of 47 chromosomes in Down's syndrome was reported by Lejeune et al. (1959).
Either a structural or a numerical anomaly in the two X chromosomes of the female complement results in the failure of commencement of menstruation and the development of the secondary sexual characters, a condition referred to clinically as primary amenorrhea. Menstruation is the cyclical discharge of blood, mucus and certain other substances from the uterus in females who fall within the reproductive age group (15-45years)
